The Sacred Circuit

Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage spans from the 3rd century BC to the 13th century AD and is concentrated in the northern dry zone. These six sites form the core of every cultural journey – from the world’s oldest living tree to the island’s most venerated Buddhist relic.

Sigiriya

The 5th-century fortress that changes how you understand ancient engineering

The hydraulic water gardens at the base of Sigiriya are engineering from the 5th century AD, still intact and still legible. The frescoes painted onto the sheer rock face have survived 1,500 years of weather. The Mirror Wall carries devotional poetry inscribed by visitors across a thousand years. The summit view at first light, across the Cultural Triangle plains, is everything the views suggest, and more. Go before the gates open.

Best time to visit

Year-round. A pre-dawn ascent is essential.

Best for

All travellers – the single most compelling site in Sri Lanka

Stay:
  • Water Garden Sigiriya (design mirrors the ancient water gardens – the most architecturally resonant choice)
  • Aliya Resort (pool, jungle setting)
  • Jetwing Vil Uyana (eco-lodge, wetland)

In our tours: Featured in all 12 round tours. Day Tour 1: Sigiriya and Dambulla Cave Temple.

Anuradhapura

Sri Lanka’s first royal capital - 2,500 years visible in a single morning

Founded in the 4th century BC and continuously occupied for over a millennium, Anuradhapura holds the Sri Maha Bodhi – planted in 288 BC as a cutting from the original Bodhi Tree, and the oldest documented living tree on earth. The Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba stands 55 metres tall. The Jetavanaramaya was, when built, one of the tallest structures on the planet. By bicycle with a specialist archaeology guide, it becomes a coherent story rather than a list of ruins.

Best time to visit

Year-round. November to March for comfortable cycling.

Best for

Buddhist pilgrims, heritage travellers, culture-focused visitors

Stay:
  • Ulagalla Resort (finest option – boutique, 58-acre estate)
  • Palm Garden Village (reliable mid-range)

In our tours: Tours 1, 6 and 11 include Anuradhapura. Day Tour 4: Anuradhapura Sacred City Cycling.

Polonnaruwa

The medieval capital abandoned in the 13th century and left largely intact

Polonnaruwa was the island’s capital from the 10th to 13th century, and what remains is extraordinarily complete for its age. The Gal Vihara – where four Buddhas were carved from a single granite rock face – is the centrepiece. The Royal Palace ruins, the Sacred Quadrangle and the Vatadage are all within cycling distance of one another. Best with a specialist heritage guide who can make the medieval capital narratively alive.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Early morning for scenic.

Best for

Cyclists, heritage lovers, scenic travellers

Stay:
  • Deer Park Hotel, Giritale (lakeside, walking distance to the site)
  • Sunrise Lake Resort, Giritale (quieter, eco-focused)

In our tours: Tours 1, 5, 9 and 11 include Polonnaruwa. Day Tour 10: Polonnaruwa Heritage Cycling.

Mihintale

The mountain where Buddhism arrived in Sri Lanka - the most sacred landscape in the country

Mihintale is the site where the monk Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BC and introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka – the most significant cultural event in the island’s history. Ancient stairways, meditation platforms, the Ambasthala Dagoba and panoramic views across the sacred landscape. Approximately 1,840 steps to the summit; the lower terraces are accessible without the full climb.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Early morning preferred.

Best for

Buddhist pilgrims, heritage travellers, spiritual visitors

Stay:
  • Same properties as Anuradhapura (see Destination 2) – 13km away

In our tours: Tour 1 (Sacred Buddhist Heritage Journey) and Tour 11 (Buddhist Pilgrimage and Sacred Heritage Route) include Mihintale.

Kandy

Sri Lanka’s last royal capital - the cultural and spiritual heart of the island

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at its centre, the lake beneath the hills, the Kandyan dance tradition and the Esala Perahera in July and August – Kandy carries a weight the other cities don’t quite match. The Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya are among Asia’s finest. A full day here earns its place in any itinerary, however short.

Best time to visit

Year-round. July to August for the Esala Perahera.

Best for

All travellers – essential on any Sri Lanka itinerary

Stay:
  • The Kandy House (finest boutique property, colonial villa)
  • Cinnamon Citadel (reliable, riverside)
  • Amaya Hills (hilltop, pool, valley views)

In our tours: Featured in all 12 round tours. Day Tour 5: Kandy Cultural Heritage.

Dambulla

Five cave shrines, 150 gilded Buddhas, 2,000 years of continuous devotion

Dambulla’s five cave shrines were first used in the 1st century BC and have been in continuous use ever since. The ceiling murals of Cave 2 cover every surface in imagery spanning two millennia of Buddhist devotion. The quality of the diffused interior light changes through the day – late afternoon is optimal for scenic. A specialist guide makes the iconography readable.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Afternoon for the softest interior light.

Best for

All travellers – typically combined with Sigiriya

Stay:
  • Best as a transit stop; no need to stay. Sigiriya properties (see Destination 1) are twenty minutes away.

In our tours: Featured in Tours 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 12 as a transit stop. Day Tour 1: Sigiriya and Dambulla Cave Temple.

Safari & Wildlife ·

The Wild South

Sri Lanka’s southern arc holds some of the world’s most productive wildlife country – the highest leopard density per square kilometre on the planet, vast elephant herds in open grassland, and a deep-water canyon off the south coast where blue whales migrate reliably from November to April.

Yala National Park

World-record leopard density - and everything else

Block 1 of Yala has the highest known density of wild leopards per square kilometre anywhere on earth. Wild elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, painted storks and flamingos in the coastal lagoon – a supporting cast that would be headline news anywhere else. A private jeep with a dedicated specialist tracker makes the difference between a good day in the bush and a morning most people talk about for years.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Best October to April. Partially closed August to September.

Best for

Wildlife lovers, culture-focused travellers, safari enthusiasts – all markets

Stay:
  • Chena Huts by Uga (finest option – elevated platforms, exceptional scenic)
  • Wild Coast Tented Lodge (design-led, ocean and park)
  • Cinnamon Wild Yala (larger, reliable, more facilities)

In our tours: Tours 4, 6, 8 and 9 include Yala. Day Tour 2: Yala Leopard and Wildlife Safari.

Udawalawe National Park

Wild elephant herds in open grassland - the most reliable wildlife park in Sri Lanka

Udawalawe delivers what some parks make you wait for: large wild elephant herds in open terrain, visible and active throughout the day. The late afternoon at the reservoir edge is consistently among Sri Lanka’s best wildlife viewing situations. The Elephant Transit Home adds a genuinely affecting encounter with orphaned calves at scheduled feeding times.

Best time to visit

Year-round.

Best for

All travellers – especially families and culture-focused visitors

Stay:
  • Kalu’s Hideaway (small, excellent, genuinely close to the park)
  • Elephant Reach Hotel (reliable mid-range)

In our tours: Tours 5, 6 and 7 include Udawalawe. Day Tour 3: Udawalawe Elephant Safari and Elephant Transit Home.

Mirissa

Where the deep water begins and the blue whales arrive

The deep-water canyon off Mirissa is one of the world’s most reliable blue whale migration corridors. Pre-dawn boat departure, out beyond the headland into deep water, and then – on a good morning – a blue whale surfacing. Sperm whales and spinner dolphin pods are regular company. Outside whale season, Polhena Reef has resident hawksbill turtles.

Best time to visit

November to April for whales. Year-round for the beach.

Best for

Wildlife lovers, whale watchers, beach travellers

Stay:
  • Mirissa Hills (hilltop cinnamon estate, panoramic bay views)
  • Lantern Boutique Hotel (beachfront)
  • Ubuntu Beach Villas by Reveal (private villas)

In our tours: Tours 4, 6 and 9 include Mirissa. Day Tour 2 (Yala) is accessible from a Mirissa base.

Wilpattu National Park

Sri Lanka’s largest national park - villu lakes, dry forest and almost no other visitors

Wilpattu is defined by its villu lakes – natural circular water holes in the forest that attract wildlife throughout the day. Far fewer visitors than Yala, and a very different atmosphere: dense dry forest, lake reflections and a quality of quiet wilderness that is increasingly rare in accessible wildlife parks.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Avoid November to January for monsoon access.

Best for

Wildlife enthusiasts, adventurous travellers

Stay:
  • Kulu Safaris Wilpattu (best-positioned camp, tented, genuine wilderness feel)
  • Mahoora Tented Safari Camp

In our tours: Tour 6 (Wildlife, Tea Trails and Boutique Coast) includes Wilpattu. Day Tour 11: Wilpattu Wilderness Safari.

Kumana National Park

Sri Lanka’s most underrated wildlife park - wetlands, birds and coastal forest

Kumana sits at the eastern end of the Yala complex and offers a different experience entirely – dense wetland habitat, lagoon systems and coastal forest that are among the most productive birdwatching environments in South Asia. Leopards and elephants are present. The near-absence of other visitors makes it worth including for travellers who have already done Yala.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Best April to July.

Best for

Wildlife enthusiasts, bird enthusiasts, adventurous travellers

Stay:
  • Kumana Village Hotel or a nearby safari lodge – limited options reflect its off-path character

In our tours: Tours 5 and 10 include Kumana as part of the east coast and south safari section.

Tea Country & Mountains ·

The Highlands

Sri Lanka’s central highlands contain the island’s most dramatic railway, its most productive tea estates and a plateau at 2,100 metres where the ground simply ends at World’s End. The scenic train between Nanu Oya and Ella is one of the most consistently viewed rail journeys in Asia.

Ella

The highland town most travellers find difficult to leave

Ella works because several things coincide: a dramatic valley gap with a view forty kilometres south, tea estates within walking distance, the Nine Arch Bridge as the island’s most viewed structure, and a genuine independent café and food culture. At the right time of morning – early, mist still in the valley, no one else on the trail – it is very close to perfect.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Cooler and greener May to September.

Best for

All travellers – hikers, culture-focused travellers, couples, backpackers

Stay:
  • 98 Acres Resort (best ridge position, fine dining, excellent pool)
  • Zion View (smaller, good value, hillside)
  • Ella Gap Tourist Rest (simple, central)

In our tours: Featured in all 12 tours. Day Tours 8 (scenic train) and 9 (Ella hike) both centre on Ella.

Nuwara Eliya

The colonial hill station at 1,868 metres - still faintly Victorian

Nuwara Eliya was built by the British to feel like home, and the result is genuinely strange and wonderful – a Victorian post office, a racecourse, a hill club with a dress code and tea estates across every hillside. The cold air, the colonial buildings and the estate landscape combine into something unlike anywhere else in South Asia.

Best time to visit

January to April for the clearest mornings.

Best for

Tea lovers, couples, history enthusiasts, scenic travellers

Stay:
  • Tea Trails Bungalows (finest option – isolated estate bungalows near Hatton, roughly 1–1.5 hrs from Nuwara Eliya town)
  • Heritance Tea Factory (most atmospheric hotel – a converted Victorian factory)
  • The Grand Hotel (historical, large)

In our tours: Tours 2, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 12 include Nuwara Eliya. Day Tour 8’s scenic train departs from Nanu Oya, close by.

Horton Plains

The roof of Sri Lanka - a plateau that ends at a vertical drop

At 2,100 metres, Horton Plains is the highest and flattest landscape in Sri Lanka. The nine-kilometre circuit trail passes through montane cloud forest to World’s End: a sheer escarpment where the plateau simply stops and the plains 900 metres below open up on a clear morning. Baker’s Falls on the return. The cloud window is everything – which is why the dawn departure is non-negotiable.

Best time to visit

January to April. Depart by 6.30am – cloud closes the view after 10am.

Best for

Hikers, early risers, scenic travellers

Stay:
  • No accommodation on the plateau. Tea Trails or Heritance Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya serve as the base, 45 minutes by road.

In our tours: A natural day trip from any Nuwara Eliya base - available as an add-on to Tours 2, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 12, or as a Tailor-Made addition.

Knuckles Mountain Range

UNESCO biosphere reserve - Sri Lanka’s most underrated highland landscape

The Knuckles are a separate highland ecosystem east of Kandy – cloud forest above 1,500 metres, endemic wildlife, river crossings and trails ranging from gentle village paths to full-day ridge routes. Almost none of Sri Lanka’s standard itineraries include it. For travellers who want genuine wilderness rather than organised beauty, it is worth two days.

Best time to visit

January to April for the driest conditions.

Best for

Trekkers, birdwatchers, eco-conscious travellers

Stay:
  • Hunas Falls by Amaya (most established, waterfall setting)
  • The Eighth (newer, more intimate, mountain views)

In our tours: Not included in the standard twelve tours, but available as a Tailor-Made extension from a Kandy base.

Beach, Surf & Marine ·

6 places

The Active Coast

Sri Lanka’s coastline changes completely as you move around it. The southwest is surf culture, whale watching and colonial fort towns. The south is wide, uncrowded and quiet. The east coast is a different ocean in a different season – flat, reef-sheltered and almost undiscovered outside its surf months.

Galle

A Dutch colonial sea fortress that never stopped being lived in

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site that also functions as a town – boutique hotels, independent bookshops, galleries, a Dutch Reformed Church from 1755, all inside 17th-century coral-stone ramparts above the Indian Ocean. Portuguese foundations, Dutch reconstruction, British additions: three layers of colonial history readable in a single afternoon walk. The rampart walk at late afternoon is the thing most visitors remember longest.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Best November to April.

Best for

Heritage lovers, design travellers, all markets

Stay:
  • Amangalla (finest property in the fort, the former Dutch Governor’s residence)
  • Fort Bazaar (design-led boutique)
  • The Bartizan (smaller, personal, excellent fort location)

In our tours: Tours 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 12 include Galle. Day Tour 6: Galle Fort and Southern Coastal Drive.

Mirissa Whale Watching Point

One of the world’s most reliable blue whale migration corridors

Sri Lanka sits above a deep-water canyon where blue whales and sperm whales migrate reliably from November to April. Pre-dawn departure from Mirissa harbour, out beyond the headland, and then – on a good morning – a blue whale surfacing within a few hundred metres. A responsible licensed operator only, with strict distance standards maintained from all animals at all times.

Best time to visit

November to April only. Peak December to March.

Best for

Wildlife lovers, marine culture-focused visitors, couples

Stay:
  • Same properties as Mirissa (see Destination 9)

In our tours: Tours 4, 9 and 10 include whale watching, seasonally. Day Tour 3 (Udawalawe) is often combined with a Mirissa base.

Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka’s east coast surf capital - Main Point and a genuine surf culture

Main Point in Arugam Bay delivers a long right-hander from May to October that works for complete beginners and rewards experience. The fishing village behind it is genuinely low-key – a few good restaurants, Pottuvil Lagoon five minutes away by boat, and a pace entirely unlike the south coast.

Best time to visit

May to October for surf. Year-round for the lagoon.

Best for

Surfers, backpackers, adventurous travellers

Stay:
  • Stardust Beach Hotel (reliable, local, well-run)
  • Siam View Hotel (long-standing traveller favourite)

In our tours: Tours 5 and 10 include Arugam Bay. Day Tour 7: Arugam Bay Surf Lesson and Pottuvil Lagoon.

Weligama

The best beginner surf break in Sri Lanka and a fishing village that still functions

Weligama Bay has a long, gentle right-hander that works for complete beginners and rewards more time in the water. The fishing village behind the bay is still a working port – boats out before 5am, the morning catch laid out at the harbour by mid-morning. The restaurants that have opened here are genuinely good for seafood.

Best time to visit

November to April for the best swell. Warm water year-round.

Best for

Surfers, young couples, beach lovers

Stay:
  • Cape Weligama (clifftop luxury resort)
  • Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa (beachfront, family-friendly)
  • Eraeliya Villas & Gardens (boutique, oceanfront)

In our tours: Tours 4, 6 and 9 include or pass through Weligama.

Hiriketiya

The horseshoe bay that the surf crowd found and kept mostly quiet

Hiriketiya is a bowl-shaped bay with a consistent beach break, warm water and a strip of genuinely good beach cafés behind the sand. It has the energy of a surf town that has not yet been packaged – which is precisely why it keeps appearing in the itineraries of travellers who have been to Weligama and want something different.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Best November to April for consistent swell.

Best for

Surfers, wellness travellers, young couples

Stay:
  • Dots Bay House (the most characterful property)
  • Hiriketiya Hideaway (relaxed guesthouse, close to the beach)
  • Salt House (boutique, jungle-view yoga and pool)

In our tours: Tours 5 and 10 include Hiriketiya.

Tangalle

The wide, quiet south coast before it became commercially known

Tangalle has the south coast’s best combination of quiet and beautiful – wide, empty bays, the Rekawa sea turtle nesting beach and resorts with more space and more privacy than anywhere further west. Specifically recommended for travellers who have done the southern circuit before and want something less packaged.

Best time to visit

November to April.

Best for

Couples, slow travellers, wellness seekers

Stay:
  • Amanwella (finest property, direct beach access)
  • Buckingham Place (beautiful gardens)
  • Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort (large-scale luxury, extensive grounds)

In our tours: Tours 8 and 9 include Tangalle.

Pilgrimage & Cultural Landscapes ·

4 places

Sacred & Spiritual

Sri Lanka’s spiritual landscape goes deeper than the standard temple circuit. Four religions share a single sacred mountain. A forest monastery from the 1st century BC is being reclaimed by jungle in the dry zone north of Minneriya. A kovil in Jaffna has drawn pilgrims continuously for a thousand years.

Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada)

A mountain sacred to four religions - the pre-dawn climb is the experience

Adam’s Peak is simultaneously sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. The pre-dawn climb with lanterns on the stone steps, and thousands of people from all four traditions ascending in the dark, is one of those experiences with very few equivalents anywhere. The triangular shadow cast westward across the lowland plains at first light is the payoff.

Best time to visit

January to May (pilgrimage season, steps illuminated). Avoid June to November.

Best for

Pilgrims, adventurous hikers, spiritual travellers

Stay:
  • No accommodation on the peak. Green Hut or Slightly Chilled Guesthouse in Dalhousie serve as the practical base; Tea Trails near Hatton is the premium approach.

In our tours: A natural add-on from Tours 2, 4 and 8 in the Nuwara Eliya section, or as a Tailor-Made addition during pilgrimage season.

Kataragama

Multi-faith pilgrimage site - fire-walking, oil lamps and the sacred Menik Ganga

Buddhist, Hindu and Vedda shrines are built around the sacred Menik Ganga river. The Esala festival involves fire-walking and acts of devotion performed for devotion rather than audience. The oil lamps reflected in the river at dusk are one of Sri Lanka’s most striking images. Best approached from a Yala base.

Best time to visit

July to August for the Esala festival. Any Poya full moon for regular puja.

Best for

Spiritual travellers, cultural observers, culture-focused travellers

Stay:
  • Best as a day visit from Yala-area lodges – Chena Huts by Uga or Wild Coast Tented Lodge serve as natural bases

In our tours: An add-on from a Yala base in Tours 4 and 8.

Nallur Kovil, Jaffna

The most important Hindu temple in Sri Lanka - at the spiritual heart of the Tamil north

A towering Dravidian gopuram in Jaffna – the evening puja fills the outer courtyard with conch shells, oil lamps and sacred ash. During the 25-day Nallur festival in August, it becomes one of the most intense pilgrimage concentrations in South Asia. Jaffna itself rewards at least one night.

Best time to visit

August for the Nallur festival. Any evening for puja.

Best for

Pilgrims, cultural travellers, northern Sri Lanka explorers

Stay:
  • Jetwing Jaffna (the only refined hotel in the city)
  • Heritage Hotel Jaffna for a simpler stay

In our tours: Not included in the standard twelve tours, but available as a Tailor-Made northern extension from an Anuradhapura base.

Ritigala Forest Monastery

Ancient ruins being reclaimed by jungle - almost nobody comes here

A ruined forest monastery in the dry-zone wilderness northwest of Minneriya, occupied by ascetic monks from the 1st century BC and now half-reclaimed by the forest. Stone meditation platforms, raised walkways, bathing pools. No gilded statues, no tourist infrastructure, almost no other visitors. The final section of road requires a 4WD.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Early morning only – extremely hot and dry by midday.

Best for

Off-path seekers, culture-focused travellers, heritage enthusiasts

Stay:
  • No accommodation at Ritigala. Sigiriya properties serve as the natural base, 45 to 60 minutes by road.

In our tours: An optional stop from a Sigiriya base in Tours 1, 6 and 11.

Off-Path Destinations ·

The Unexpected

Sri Lanka holds a set of places that standard itineraries skip entirely – and that consistently give more to the travellers who find them than almost anything on the main circuit.

Pidurangala Rock

The view over Sigiriya that most culture-focused travellers actually want

Pidurangala Rock is twenty minutes’ walk from Sigiriya and offers the view most heritage-focused travellers actually want: Sigiriya Rock rising above the jungle, best at sunrise when the light catches the rock face. Less crowded than Sigiriya, a shorter climb, no entrance fee. The ancient rock temple at the base is interesting in its own right.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Sunrise only.

Best for

Visual culture travellers, Sigiriya repeaters, adventurous hikers

Stay:
  • Same properties as Sigiriya (see Destination 1)

In our tours: Featured in Tours 2, 3 and 7 as an afternoon or morning extension on the Sigiriya day.

Gal Oya National Park

Boat safari on an ancient reservoir - elephants swimming between the islands

Gal Oya’s boat safari on Senanayake Samudraya is one of Sri Lanka’s most unexpectedly extraordinary wildlife experiences – wild elephants swimming between islands, sometimes within metres of the boat. Almost no other visitors. The Gal Oya Lodge is one of the most thoughtfully run eco-properties on the island.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Best November to April.

Best for

Wildlife enthusiasts, eco-travellers, adventurous couples

Stay:
  • Gal Oya Lodge – the only serious option, well-run, remote, with excellent guided safaris

In our tours: Available as a Tailor-Made east coast extension from Tour 5 or Tour 10.

Buduruwagala Rock Temple

9th-century Mahayana Buddhas carved from a granite cliff face

A 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist rock temple 5km from Wellawaya – seven colossal figures carved from granite, with traces of original gilt paint still visible on the standing Buddha. Almost always visited without a crowd. On the direct route from Ella to Yala, it adds only thirty minutes. Most drivers do not mention it unless asked.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Mid-afternoon for the best timing on the carved faces.

Best for

Cultural travellers, culture-focused travellers, history lovers

Stay:
  • No accommodation. Yala-area lodges are 45 minutes further.

In our tours: A natural stop on Tours 4, 8 and 9 during the Ella to Yala transition via Wellawaya.

Japanese Peace Pagoda, Galle

A piece of Japanese spiritual heritage on the Sri Lankan coast

The Japanese Peace Pagoda stands on a headland above the Indian Ocean near Galle – a gift from the Japanese Buddhist community, stark white against the blue sky and sea. It is a significant destination for visitors from Japan and a genuinely striking architectural scenic subject for all travellers.

Best time to visit

Year-round.

Best for

Cultural travellers, pilgrims from Japan, culture-focused visitors

Stay:
  • Same properties as Galle (see Destination 16)

In our tours: Tour 3 (Cultural and Coastal Heritage Journey) includes the Japanese Peace Pagoda as a confirmed visit. Tour 12 includes it as optional. Day Tour 6 (Galle Fort) includes it as an afternoon option.

Pottuvil Lagoon

East coast lagoon with crocodiles, kingfishers, mangroves and local fishing culture

Pottuvil Lagoon sits behind Arugam Bay – a 45-minute boat excursion through mangrove channels, with mugger crocodiles on the banks, kingfishers in the vegetation and local fishermen casting nets in the morning light. An underrated half-day that adds a different quality to the Arugam Bay experience.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Best May to October during the east coast season.

Best for

Wildlife enthusiasts, eco-travellers, east coast visitors

Stay:
  • Same properties as Arugam Bay (see Destination 18)
